Scratch League Rules

    1. At the beginning of each season any member belonging to more than one affiliated club may play for either club in the Scratch or Handicap League, but she must stay with that club for the year in that particular league.

    1. Captains must exchange their completed team sheets on arrival at the club.

    1. Teams will be made up of 6 players with a maximum Handicap Index of 18.0, and will play in pairs better ball format off scratch. All players must have a minimum of five scores recorded on their WHS record in the 12 months prior to the match.  If a player's handicap Index goes beyond the 18.0 limit they can still play.

    1. The lowest handicap player will play with the 4th lowest player, the 2nd will play with the 5th, and the 3rd will play with the 6th.

    1. Players may play for both the Scratch and Handicap League; this does not affect the rule of playing 6 times only, which only applies to the Handicap League.

    1. If on the day, a team cannot field 6 players, players are missing or late, they must still play in the order above, as in Rule 4. The game in which the player is missing, plays last against the original opponents, if necessary one player playing two players.  If the missing player arrives after her team member has teed off she can join in the match at the next or subsequent hole.  If both players have still not arrived 10 minutes after the rest of the team have teed off then the game is deemed forfeit and will be entered on the score sheet as a 10/8 loss.  This also applies if a player or pair is disqualified.  Rule 23.4 applies.   Failure to provide a team is unacceptable, and shall result in the forfeit and loss of the match 3 to 0 and the awarding of 2 points to the opposing team.   If a club cannot get a team together within 2 weeks of the planned match, they forfeit the match or send a reduced team.

    1. Matches to be played to a natural conclusion, ie 3&2 etc.  A pair cannot agree to foreshorten a match, but may concede a match.  Losers can concede the match, so if they were about to start the 15th hole they would lose 4 down but cannot agree to halve the match.  In the event of a tie, the first pair of each team will play a sudden death play off from the first hole to determine the winner.

    1. Only team Captains can call off the match whilst it is in progress, and should reschedule if there is opportunity to do so. Individual pairings may not agree to an honourable half. In the event of the ill-health of a player during the match, the remaining player should continue the match or the pairing to concede the match.

    1. In 2024,  there will be two divisions: North and South.  Teams will be drawn to play 2 home and 2 away matches within their division; the home teams should offer three dates, at least one weekday and one weekend date to the away team when arranging matches.

    1. Points will be awarded for each match as follows: 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw. In a conceded match winners will receive 2 points, the loser 0 points.  No count back of games or holes from the conceded match.

    1. Home Club (the Captain) to be responsible for sending the results on official match sheets, as soon as possible to:

    1. In order to determine the winner or in the event of a tie, when all matches have been played, the total points won determines the winner.  If a tie then a count back on individual matches won.  If there is still a tie, count back on holes won.  If there is still a tie a play-off on a neutral course will be arranged.

    1. Matches to be played between 31st March and 25th August 2024. Permission may be requested for a new date if matches have to be cancelled due to inclement weather.  In the event of a match being halted once started, teams should re-arrange.  If this is not possible a halved match will be awarded.

    1. The winning clubs from the North and South will play against each other for the Women’s Scratch Champions.   The pair that will go out to play in the play-off (should all the matches be all square) will go out last so that they can go straight back out to play.   Caddies may be used in the final.  Clubs must not ask for the courtesy of the course hosting the final.
    1.  Players must walk at all times during league matches unless a player has a current medical condition on the day of the relevant match and has given prior notification to the opposing team Captain/Representative. Captains are asked to record buggy use on the results sheets. The Association will take each player on trust and will not enquire into the nature of any said medical condition, nor will it require evidence by way of a medical certificate as proof of such a condition. The buggy shall be for the use of the player and her equipment. Hiring of the buggy shall be the sole responsibility of the player. Players are expected to familiarise themselves with the Health and Safety policies of the host club in so far as it relates to ride on buggies.

    1. Distance measuring devices may be used in County matches.

    1. Any infringement of the League Rules may result in the loss of the match.

    1. Any club wishing to enter or withdraw from the League for the following year must do so IN WRITING BY 31ST JULY 2024.

    1. The League Sub Committee shall consist of the County Captain, County Vice Captain, Immediate Past Captain, League Secretary, Secretary (ex officio) and County Competition Representatives from each of the County Divisions currently serving on the Executive Committee.
